Bench Fabricator   Lathe Operator


Title: Bench Fabricator
Reports To: Production Manager
Work Hours: Monday-Friday 6:00A.M. – 2:30P.M. (40 Hours) Overtime Possible
Salary: $10.00-$25.00 Depending on Experience

Required: High School Graduate; Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds

Summary Description: Develops Quartz glass products from raw glass material to required dimensions applying knowledge of glass technology and glass blowing techniques.
Tasks:
  1. Develops product from blueprint specifications supplied by the customer with raw glass material provided.
  2. Heats glass tubing to pliable stage, using gas flame.
  3. Shapes, bends, or joins sections of blown glass tubing, using flaring, pressing, and flattening hand tools and stop cork.
  4. Inspects and measures product to verify conformance to specifications, using instruments such as micrometers, calipers, height gauge, and ruler.
  5. May anneal product, using annealing oven.
  6. May cut glass tubing to specified size and polish tube edges, using hand cutting and polishing wheels.
  7. Perform other tasks as directed by management.

Summary Description: Operates glass blowing lathe to join and shape quartz glass according to blueprints and customer work orders.
Tasks:
  1. Selects, inserts, and clamps specified mandrels in head and tailstock of lathe, using wrenches.
  2. Turns knobs to adjust rotation speed.
  3. Inserts and clamps tube and other glass parts of various lengths, shapes, and diameters to be joined in checks, using mallet and wrenches.
  4. Lights fixed jets and hand torches and turns gas valves to adjust height and color of flames and obtain specified temperature.
  5. Turns handwheels to move head and tailstock and bring work pieces in contact with flames.
  6. Blows through hose connected to center of chuck to shape glass or maintain air pressure within tube.
  7. Selects and manipulates spatula, hand torches, and tips, and glass rods to shape glass or maintain air pressure within tube.
  8. Uses hand torch and fixed jets to anneal joined or shaped areas.
  9. Turns handwheels to move head and tailstock and stretch or separate heated stock to specifications.
  10. May manually move glass tube over flame and blow it into specified shape.
  11. Perform other tasks as directed by management.
